World Within Us, The

by Flaxton, Terry

Video 1988

This tape is an attempt to deal with narrative, new technology, video imagery and lyricism, through the life and death of an old man. In life he has been a successful writer, in dying he sees the irrelevance of success compared with doing the two most important things, “the necessary and the impossible”. Not doing either leads to a profound spiritual sickness and a loss of faith in life and love. Sitting at his desk, he gives voice to an inner landscape of dreams, fears, regrets. His wife, who originates from a story by John Cowper Powys, looks on patiently, almost forgivingly, as he tots up his three score years and ten and tries to make sense of his past. Made for Channel 4’s Ghosts in the Machine series
