"'Where were you when your child was born? What did you think when you heard that your father was sick?'. The thoughts and memories of others are always present. In Diary, the members of a family ask themselves, each in their turn, where they were and what they were doing when news of important events reached them. This gives extra meaning to the frozen images of places which are in themselves neutral: a parking lot near a supermarket, a residential street, an office. The opening shot of cars slowly circumnavigating a roundabout with all the elegance and grace of the ladies in waiting in Visconti's film, Ludwig, sets the tone of this charming and sensitive film".
