Video 1984

This video synthesises the media of photography, writing and sound to express a recollection of a particular place on a particular day. It is not so much a documentation piece, however, as an elaboration of the search for an ideal image of the landscape. In this search there is a process of interchange between visual and poetic images, and a division between security and threat. Much of this tape consists of white text on a black background. Photographs are shown almost as briefly as in their original exposure, the whole pattern of editing being designed to give what I considered appropriate weightings to the sounds recorded out-of-doors, the voice, and the visual rhythms of the text. - B.R.
